King Crab Shack

So it all started out as a joke.....

When I first moved to Juneau (1996) some friends took me out crabbing for the first time. I was hooked! I loved it! I found crab fascinating, the pulling of the pots, the cleaning of the crab, cooking, the scenery, the company and of course the taste of the crab was awesome!

Pretty soon, whenever friends came to visit, I would take them out on the boat. I often heard it was the highlight of their trip.

One day on a particularly rough day on the water, I said jokingly, "I'm just going to buy a hotdog cart and start selling you guys legs "One Leg at a Time". We all had a good laugh about that, but the idea always stayed with me. I would always talk about what it would look like, how it would "feel". I'm sure my friends were sick of hearing it.

Finally in 2006, the company I was working for went bankrupt. I decided then & there to take matters into my own hands and take a stab at my dream. Things started falling into place.

Almost 15 years since the "idea", here I am. The crab shack is going into it's 7th year now. I feel very fortunate to have made it this long in a tumultuous crab market. There have been a lot of learning curves & 16 hr days. I have had great support of friends, family & some key industry people who have helped me get to this point. However, I could not have done it without all of the great customers I have had along the way. You have told friends, who told friends, etc. The emails, photos & stories kept me going in the rough & quiet times. For that I THANK YOU!

I hope you enjoy your experience at the Crab Shack. I appreciate you stopping by!

Crabby Crew

I have always said if we added some big screen TV’s we would have the ultimate outdoor sports bar. We love our sports and love the rivalry amongst us. Chances are, someone who works here is a fan of your team. But wait to ask them anything until you get your food! Thanks to my awesome crew. Without you the shack wouldn’t be what it is.

KrisKris – Manager (aka Blue Eyes)

I met Kris in an alley one day in 2007. (Really) He just got to town from Kalamazoo, Michigan. He stopped by, we talked, he’s been working for me ever sense. He’s an extension of me, knows exactly the way I like things done & he keeps me in line. The ultimate customer service guy. I couldn’t do it without him. A DETROIT fan.

DaveDave - Manager (aka Mad Greek)

Brooklyn, NY born and raised in Greece, Dave is my numbers guy, my idea guy and our keep it in check guy & our resident sports commentator. The one I bounce ideas off of. He’s also my other half. His experience and advice are invaluable (even if I don’t always want to hear it). He brought Jeff over to me as well. Fluent in Greek he’s the ultimate personal host to the Greek officers on Celebrity. Never short on words, always entertaining, heart of gold. An avid Gators & Tampa Bay Bucs fan. He will keep you up-to-date on scores. All of them!

Jeff Jeff - (aka Boston Jeff)

What do you get when you cross an Alaskan born guy, with a Native (Tglinit) mom & Italian dad and raise him in Boston?! WATCH OUT! Jeff is my mainstay, my morning guy & my workhorse since 2008. I can always count on him. Old school manners and Boston charm. Truly cares that everyone has a great experience. Our resident flirt. People ask more for him than me. And he can make a meatball! I need him around for a long, long time. A very passionate BOSTON fan. (Pictured with Travis from the Wizard)

Devin Devin–

Born & raised in Alaska and proud father of our first Crab Shack baby! Devin is my “GOTO” guy. He has been with me the longest and he can do it all! He’s my maintenance guy, stock guy, kill & clean crab guy and then jump in an cook it guy. He’s patient, kind and a very nice young man who “gets it”. I appreciate that he still works with me almost full-time while working another full-time job & helping raise his beautiful baby girl. He always has my back. PATRIOTS fan.

CliffClifford Fick

Because every business needs a good advisor and friend. A retired exec at Marriott Corp. he has the experience and advise that I need and he happily gives it in his no-nonsense way. He keeps me focused on the big picture. I’ve learned a lot about business from him and he even works at the “Shack” during his vacations to Juneau to see his grandkids! He’s is a fantastic cook and a gracious & fun tour guide when we visit Oregon wine country. He & his wife Roxanne live in Astoria, OR. He’s always a phone call away. His sport is golf.

Doug and JoanDoug & Joan

I owe the “idea” of the shack to my good friends Doug & Joan. If it wasn’t for them taking me out on the boat, the idea never would have come to fruition. They inspired me, gave me tons of encouragement and worked tirelessly after their jobs & on weekends to help me get the shack up and running... They took me out fishing & crabbing and showed me the ropes. From driving the boat to navigating the waters, rigging the fishing gear (which I am still not good at), killing, cooking & cleaning the fish and crab. They took all of my random friends & family out in a moments notice, with enthusiasm and have put up with me for many years. Doug & their yard are in almost every Alaska picture I have. Ha! They are amazing friends whom I love dearly. THANK YOU! GREENBAY PACKERS fans.

The Ladies
For all of the guys at the shack, let’s not forget the amazing, talented girls that work here. (And keep the guys in line) All strong & independent, a joy to be around! I have always loved their enthusiasm and diversity. Some have been with me for years and some have moved on, but I still keep tabs on them and am always happy to see them again.
